The Foundation of the Look

A Distinctive Jacket Changes the Character of the Whole Outfit.

A tweed jacket brings together the fabric, lapels, front style, fit and proportion that define the outfit. Wear it as part of a coordinated suit or, where the selected product permits, style it separately with contrasting trousers, a skirt or more relaxed wardrobe pieces.

Adult ranges include Made to Order standard sizing and Made to Measure tailoring based on individual measurements. Boys’ jackets are Made to Order using the sizes and options shown on each product.

Jacket Styling

Personalise the Details That Shape the Silhouette.

Available selections vary by product, fabric and service, but these are the principal choices that define a tailored tweed jacket.

Fabric

Choose from classic herringbones, windowpanes, overchecks, bold checks, country checks and lighter Highland Weaves.

Jacket Front

Select single- or double-breasted construction where offered. Double-breasted styling creates a broader, more formal front.

Lapel Type

Made to Order uses a classic notch lapel. Made to Measure adds peak lapels and further controls where available.

Lapel Detail

Made to Measure may include lapel-width control and selected half-faced satin options. These are not part of Made to Order.

Fit

Choose slim, regular or relaxed fit according to the intended silhouette and amount of room through the body.

Length and Sleeves

Made to Order uses available standard length options. Made to Measure uses individual measurements to refine jacket and sleeve proportion.

Pockets

Core pocket styling follows the selected product, while Made to Measure may provide wider control over pocket type and placement.

Coordinated Pieces

Match the jacket with a waistcoat and trousers or skirt, or ask whether the selected jacket can be supplied as a separate garment.

Choosing the Service

Made to Order or Made to Measure?

Adult Made to Order and Made to Measure services both produce a jacket after ordering and allow fabric and styling choices. The main difference is whether the jacket begins with a standard size or individual measurements. Boys’ jackets use the standard sizes and product-specific options shown in the dedicated collection.

Choose the Cloth

From Restrained Herringbone to Expressive Country Checks.

The fabric has the greatest influence on how a tweed jacket is perceived. A fine navy herringbone appears restrained and versatile, while a large country check or colourful overcheck creates a much stronger focal point.

Pattern scale also changes once the cloth is cut into a jacket. Lines pass across lapels, pockets, seams and shaping, so a check that looks modest on a small swatch can become more expressive across the finished garment.

Use the complete guide to compare all current swatches, relative feel and the differences between herringbone, windowpane, overcheck, Glen check and our other fabric families.

Fit and Proportion

The Right Jacket Size Is the Starting Point, Not the Finished Measurement.

Body measurements and finished-garment measurements are not the same. The jacket requires additional room for movement, a shirt and, where worn, a waistcoat.

Men’s Size to Fit

A men’s jacket labelled for a 40-inch chest is intended for a body chest of approximately 40 inches. The finished jacket itself will measure larger.

Women’s Sizing

Choose the women’s UK size, with the equivalent US size shown where applicable, and consider bust, waist, hip, shoulder and sleeve proportions.

Fit Choice

Slim, regular and relaxed fit change the intended silhouette and room. They do not correct a fundamentally unsuitable body size.

Jacket Length

Length influences the balance of the torso and the relationship between jacket, waistcoat and trousers or skirt.

Measurement Guides

Follow the relevant guide carefully and repeat measurements. Do not add your own ease unless a field specifically requests a garment measurement.

Fit Assurance

Optional Fit Assurance provides a separate fit-resolution service where additional sizing protection is required.

Build the Complete Look

Coordinate the Jacket with the Right Supporting Pieces.

A matching waistcoat and trousers or skirt create the strongest three-piece presentation. A separate jacket can also work with contrasting pieces, but availability and suitable combinations vary by fabric and product.

Use the following guides to understand how each garment contributes to the finished outfit.

Where to Wear Tweed

Choose the Jacket Around the Setting and the Statement You Want to Make.

Tweed moves easily between formal events and more relaxed occasions. Fabric, fit and styling determine whether the result feels restrained, traditional or deliberately expressive.

Weddings

Coordinate a complete three-piece suit for the groom, wedding party, page boys or guests, or use a distinctive jacket to create a less uniform look.

Race Days

Bold checks, rich colours and structured tailoring suit the visual character of race meetings and other traditional sporting occasions.

Work and Events

Classic herringbones and restrained windowpanes provide texture while remaining easier to coordinate with shirts, blouses and formal accessories.

Separates

Where available individually, a tweed jacket can be worn with plain trousers, skirts, knitwear or denim for a more relaxed interpretation.

Availability as an individual garment varies by fabric, range and product. Some jackets may be offered separately, while others are available only within a coordinated suit. Contact us with the fabric name and required men’s, women’s or boys’ style, and we will confirm the current options.

Tweed Jacket Questions

Before Choosing Your Jacket.

Answers about men’s, women’s and boys’ tailoring, Made to Order, Made to Measure, sizing, fabrics and individual garment availability.

What is the difference between a Made to Order and Made to Measure tweed jacket?

Made to Order begins with standard sizing and provides fabric, fit, jacket length and core styling choices. Made to Measure uses individual body measurements and offers wider control over proportion, lapels, pockets, button placement and other available details.

Can I buy a tweed jacket without matching trousers and a waistcoat?

Individual jacket availability varies by fabric and product. Some jackets may be supplied separately, while others are offered only as part of a coordinated suit. Contact us with the fabric and style you are considering so we can confirm the current option.

Do you make tweed jackets for men, women and boys?

Yes. Each range uses appropriate sizing and proportions. Adult jackets include Made to Order and Made to Measure options, while boys’ jackets use the standard sizes and product-specific choices shown in the dedicated Boys’ Tweed Jackets collection.

Can I buy boys’ tweed trousers or waistcoats separately?

We do not currently offer separate boys’ trouser or waistcoat categories. Those pieces are available through selected Boys’ Tweed Suits, while boys’ jackets can be purchased through their dedicated category.

Which lapels are available?

Made to Order jackets use a classic notch lapel. Made to Measure jackets may use notch or peak lapels, with further control over width and selected facing details where available.

Can I choose a double-breasted tweed jacket?

Single- and double-breasted fronts are available on selected products. The product options show the choices available for that fabric and range.

How should a men’s jacket chest size be selected?

Select the body chest size the jacket is intended to fit. A jacket labelled for a 40-inch chest is designed for a body measuring approximately 40 inches; the finished garment itself includes additional room.

How are women’s tweed jackets proportioned?

Women’s jackets are designed around women’s bust, waist, hip, shoulder and sleeve proportions, with appropriate waist shaping, jacket length and button orientation.

Which tweed fabric is the most versatile for a jacket?

Classic navy, grey and brown herringbones are generally the easiest to coordinate across several occasions. Restrained windowpanes can also provide a versatile balance between plain tailoring and a more visible check.

Can I request a free fabric sample?

Yes. We offer free fabric samples for customers considering a suit or jacket, subject to current cloth availability. Contact us with the exact fabric name or product link.

How long does a tweed jacket take to arrive?

Most Made to Order and Made to Measure garments are estimated to arrive within 4–6 weeks, including delivery, once the order has all information required to enter production. Order earlier for weddings and fixed events.

Is Fit Assurance available for a jacket?

Fit Assurance is an optional service purchased with a qualifying suit order. The precise coverage depends on the product and service terms. Read the Fit Assurance page before ordering where additional sizing protection is important.
